Federal Government To Increase Electricity Tariff (NEPA Bill)

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has announced the approval of the federal Government to immediately review electricity tariffs across the country.

AREAfather reviewing the new ammount that is to be paid by various categories of electricity consumers clearly reveal an increament that ranges from 59.7 per cent to 77.6 %.

But Consumers classified as residential (R1) were excluded from the review, in other words the 4 Naira per kWh  paid by residential (R1)  was left unchanged.

11 Distribution Companies (DISCOs) across Nigeria were affected by this increament, examples are: Enugu DISCO, Benin DISCO, Abuja DISCO, Eko DISCO, Ibadan DISCO, Ikeja DISCO, Jos DISCO, Kaduna DISCO, Kano DISCO, Port Harcourt DISCO, and Yola DISCO.

The NERC Chairman, Joseph Momoh and the Commissioner for Legal, License, and Compliance, Dafe Akpeneye signed the documents which were dated December 31, 2019.

A majority of Nigerians fall in the category of residential consumers who are those using singe phase and three-phase meters, as well as electricity consumption of about 50 kWh in premises with flats exclusively for residential purposes.

Other categories affected by this change are consumers who use electricity for economic purposes, for example: Factory owners, premises for manufacturing goods including ironmongers and welding.

meanwhile another set of category like Religious houses, water boards, enterprises that are involved in proccessing are also affected by this increament.
